James Howard Kunstler and I are thinking the same way when it comes to the mad-at-Russia disease that has infected much of the establishment in Washington, DC and New York. He has a great blog post (already recommended by Taras77 in my previous post), That War You Ordered.
But I want to hone in on one particular paragraph and drill down on the question surrounding who intercepted Michael Flynn’s conversation with the Russian Ambassador:
The Russia paranoia frenzy is serious business because it indicates that a state-of-war exists between the permanent bureaucracy of government (a.k.a. the Deep State) and the new Trump administration. There are features of the struggle that ought to be much more disturbing than the dubious alleged monkey business about Russia hacking the election and the hoo-hah around a single intercepted phone call between Michael Flynn and the Russian ambassador, made to open a line-of-communication between high-ranking officials, strictly routine business in any other administration.
The common assumption is that the NSA or the FBI intercepted the call as a routine matter of tracking everything the Russian Ambassador. But there is another possibility. What if the phone conversation was intercepted by someone overseas, such as our British cousins at GHCQ? (For those not schooled in these matters, GHCQ is the British version of the NSA). And then the Brits passed the material to the CIA or NSA or DNI?
I personally doubt that the FBI had any hand in monitoring Flynn’s call with the Russian Ambassador or in subsequently sharing the transcript of the call with other top members of the Obama Administration. Doing something like that would have only occurred with the full knowledge and cooperation of FBI Director James Comey. I do not believe that Comey would engage in such conduct, especially since Flynn was not doing anything illegal.
House Intel Committee Chair, Devin Nunes, points the finger of blame at Obama holdovers:
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes said Sunday that Obama administration holdovers are illegally leaking information to the news media in an effort to damage President Trump.
The chairman’s assessment of the leaks bolstered Mr. Trump’s claim that he is being targeted by unlawful disclosures of classified information.
“We do have people in the last administration, people who have burrowed in, perhaps all throughout the government, who clearly are leaking to the press — and it is against the law,” the California Republican said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
“Major laws have been broken. If you believe the Washington Post story that said there were nine people who said this, well these are nine people who broke the law,” he said.
It does appear that only a small number of people were given access to the intercepted phone call. That makes the FBI’s job of investigating the leaks much easier. Flynn may be gone from his job at the NSC, but the hunt for the leakers continues and will probably result in someone (or group of someones) facing indictment. I think this is far from over.
