I want to take you step by step thru the so-called “Dossier” on Donald Trump, US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE DONALD TRUMP’S ACTIVITIES IN RUSSIA AND COMPROMISING RELATIONSHIP WITH THE KREMLIN. This is an absurd but dangerous document. It is presented with the allure of presenting some insider information about the secret, nefarious activities of Donald Trump. But a careful reading of the material exposes some glaring inconsistencies and oddities.
Another important consideration, one that has been lost in much of the media reporting, is that this is not a “single” document. It is a collection of 16 separate reports, starting on the 20 June 2016 and ending on 13 December 2016. Here is just one of the “oddities”–John McCain supposedly sent a staffer to London to pick up the “Dossier” in November and then turned it over to the FBI on 9 December. How can you give the FBI a report that is dated the “13th of December” on the 9th of December?
That is just one of the problems.
The document published by Buzzfeed is not in chronological order. Here is a chronological version (The numbering convention used by those who drafted the documents gives the the year followed by a document number, “e.g. 80). The document number 2016/86 carries a 2015 date rather than a 2016 date. I am assuming that is a typo. Document 2016/95 does not have a date. It appears this was supposed to be dated sometime between 19 July and 30 July 2016.

I realize that a former MI-6 officer is credited (or blamed) for producing these reports. While I was not trained with MI-6, I cannot believe that our English cousins are so careless, sloppy, illogical and imprecise in presenting alleged human intelligence. Let’s consider a couple of examples.
The first report (2016/80) starts with the claim in the Executive Summary that the:
Russian regime has been cultivating, supporting and assisting TRUMP for at least 5 years. Aim, endorsed by PUTIN, has been to encourage splits and divisions in western alliance.
If true, that means that Putin supposedly decided to start targeting Trump in 2011 for the purpose of “encouraging splits” in the western alliance. What? Trump was not known as a national leader in 2011, especially not as a serious candidate for President. And his standing internationally? He may have been a force with Miss Universe but he was not an opinion leader in any area of the world. So explain to me how the Russians were going to use information gleaned on Donald Trump to split the “western alliance?”
The second bullet in the summary makes the point that Trump has turned down business opportunities allegedly put to him by the Russians but,
he and his inner circle have accepted a regular flow of intelligence from the Kremlin, including on his Democratic and other political rivals.
How was the Kremlin supplying a “regular” flow of intelligence? And what kind of intelligence? Was it Putin who alerted Trump to the fact that Bernie was a socialist? That Hillary was crooked? That Marco Rubio had tiny hands?
But it is the last bullet in the summary that encapsulates the contradictions and inconsistencies:
A dossier of compromising material on Hillary CLINTON has been collated by the Russian Intelligence Services over many years and mainly comprises bugged conversations she had on various visits to Russia and intercepted phone calls rather than any embarrassing conduct. The dossier is controlled by Kremlin spokesman, PESKOV, directly on PUTIN’s orders. However it has not as yet been distributed abroad, including to TRUMP.
Ok. If Trump has “accepted” a regular flow of intelligence on his Democratic rival, i.e. Clinton, then what was he getting if it was not material on Hillary Clinton? This makes no sense whatsoever. It is sloppy writing at a minimum.
It is the job of a case officer to put raw intelligence into an understandable format. It also is the job of a case officer to question his source on contradictions and elicit details. If the source claims that there is a “regular” flow of intelligence then any case officer worth their salt would insist on getting some details. What kind of intelligence?
Then we have the case of Michael Cohen, Trump’s attorney. Three of the 16 reports claim to offer up juicy insider info on Cohen:

TRUMP’s representative COHEN accompanied to Prague in August/September 2016 by 3 colleagues for secret discussions with Kremlin representat ives and associated operators/hackers. Agenda included how to process deniable cash payments to operatives; contingency plans for covering up operations; and action in event of a CLINTON election victory
Whoever drafted these documents neglected to do their basic homework. They make a factual claim about Cohen (i.e., he was in Prague in August/September 2016) that is simply not true. Once you establish that a source is fabricating information or providing false information, you can no longer accept any of the claims as valid nor accord them any legitimacy.
It is very clear that these documents were prepared and packaged for the express purpose of trying to smear Donald Trump and plant the seed of doubt regarding his political loyalties. Who would do such a thing?
Let me suggest one possibility–U.S. and British intelligence operatives who do not want to see any easing of tensions with Russia and who want to maintain the covert war in Syria against the regime of Bashar Al Assad. I am told by friends still on the inside that is exactly what is going on. There are elements of our national intelligence apparatus, which includes senior leadership such as John Brennan and Jim Clapper, that are colluding in trying to sabotage the Presidency of Donald Trump. I realize that is a startling claim to make. But the evidence is pretty clear if you consider the conduct of these gentlemen. For example, Jim Clapper claimed in early October that there was “consensus” in the intelligence community about Russian interference. Yet, there was no actual written document to that effect. You can’t have “consensus” without such a document.
President Trump will need to clean house at the DNI and at CIA. There are political appointees and some career officers who have been participating in trying to foment what I call a “soft” coup. There needs to be an accounting.
